FAQs

How High Can My Fence Be?
While not a definitive answer as local planning rules vary, a good rule of thumb is that a back garden fence can be up to 2 metres (approx. 6.5ft) high without planning permission and a front garden fence (one that borders a road or footpath) can be up to 1 metre (approx. 3.2ft) high.  A front garden fence can also be 2m high if it does not front to a road or pathway, for example, between two front gardens but not extending all the way to the path at the front of the property.
Who Is Responsible For My Fence?
The best way to answer this question is to look at your Property Title Deeds.  Boundary lines will be highlighted with a T-shaped symbol, with the tip of the T angled towards the property responsible for the boundary.  An H mark on the deeds (two T’s facing each other) indicates that this fence is the shared responsibility of both properties.   We would always recommend discussing any changes to boundary fences with your neighbours first to avoid any potential disputes.
Should I Treat My Timber Fence?
The short answer is YES.  The UK has unpredictable weather conditions with large temperature variations and rain, lots of rain.  This makes life very tough for timber so even though all the timber products we use are pressure treated to withstand rot, the best way to prolong the life and appearance of your fence is regular treatment.
Can I Use Trellis To Extend The Height Of My Fence?
In short, without planning permission, no.  The total height of your fence and trellis can be no higher than 2 metres (approx. 6.5ft).
Which Side Of the Fence Is Mine?
While not set in law, it is common convention that a fence is erected with the smooth side facing out from the property and the posts and rails facing inwards, although this is not standard practice with many single-sided contemporary fences, where the narrow horizontal slats will be installed facing inwards to the property.
What Should I Treat My Timber Fence With?
Broadly speaking timber treatments fall into two categories; water based stains and paints, and solvent based treatments.  Water based paints and stains offer ease of application and a greater range of colours while solvent based treatments offer greater penetration and protection against the weather.
